Workshop Description:

The NSF Office of Legislative and Public Affairs (OLPA) has developed an interactive workshop that targets the effective communication of advances in research and education in science and engineering taking place throughout the EPSCoR community.

OLPA has trained scientists, engineers and educators to communicate effectively to non-technical audiences for a number of years.  Although traditional scientific training typically does not prepare scientists and engineers to be effective public
communicators, researchers are increasingly called upon to share their results with the public.  This workshop, “Communicating Science: Tools for Scientists and Engineers,” will strengthen participants’ ability to communicate more effectively with
non-technical audiences. This training will also strengthen broader impact activities and broaden institutional participation within EPSCoR jurisdictions.

This one and a half day workshop targets researchers, graduate students, early-career scientists and engineers, public information officers from colleges and universities, and EPSCoR Project Directors and Administrators. The workshop will help
participants to develop messages, define their audience, and identify opportunities to engage the media and the public. Sessions will also include training in on-camera interviewing, camera usage, making public presentations, and the use of new
media.
