STEP 1 Intro
You may want to access your internet connection through a dial-up modem, or allow another person in need to access it. You can do this by setting up a modem to allow dial-in.
You'll need the following things to do this:
- Land Line Telephone Connection. This is how your guests will connect to you.
- Telephone Line(Cord). This will connect your guests to your computer.
- A Computer with a voiceband (Dial-Up) modem. Most older models have them and they are avilable at most large electronics stores.
- A Broad Band Internet Connection. This is how you will give your guests internet access.
STEP 2 Setting up your computer.
The following instructions were completely ripped off from http://werebuild.eu/wiki/Egypt/Howto_PPP:
Instructions for setting up a Dial-up Networking Server.
Setting up a dialup networking server on your computer allows other people to share your internet connection. It lets people dial-in to your computer using an old dial-up modem, and access the internet through your computer. Note that people will need to know the phone number for your computer to be able to dial-up.
After you completed any of the following setups, please join #dialup on irc.telecomix.org so they can test the connection and/or help fix remaining problems. http://chat.telecomix.org/. There are instructions for entering the chat room on the page. Note: You have to create a new user "telecomix" and set it's password to "telecomix" to make that work. Set rights as low as possible for obvious reasons. If you have problems, just choose a nickname and enter the chat room to ask someone for help setting or checking your dial-up connection.
Instructions for the most common operating systems:
Windows 98
Windows XP
Windows Vista and Windows 7
Linux / Unix
MacOS X
STEP 3 Using your new found powers for good.
You can call your land line from another phone to test it. If you hear a hellacious screech you've been successful. Now go to http://www.dialupegypt.net and add your number to the pool. Or use it in any way you think may help somebody.
