Well that didn’t take long.  Minutes after liberty candidate Kerry Bentivolio was declared the winner of the primary in Michigan’s 11th district, national Democrats immediately fired up their attack machine to try to smear our friend of liberty.

Why?  Because national Democrats and special interests know that, in Congress, Kerry Bentivolio will be a strong proponent of freedom, the Constitution, and limited government. AND he will put an end to their reckless spending.

This is not the first time that Kerry Bentivolio has been attacked by opponents for standing up for what he believes.  In mid-July, Kerry was in a tough race against a well-known, career-politician, Nancy Cassis.  Cassis was on track to win the race as she spent hundreds of thousands of dollars attacking Kerry to hide her record of job-killing higher taxes.

That’s when Liberty for All stepped in.  You see, our motto is “Liberty that Wins.” So, when we back a candidate, we don’t just dip a toe in the water. We find out exactly what needs to be done to win, and we do it.

Liberty For All first conducted a poll to assess the race between Bentivolio and Cassis. Cassis may have been running as a write-in candidate, but the poll found that she had very high name ID that translated into a 25-point lead. Our poll was followed up by a survey that the Detroit Free-Press released six days before the election showing Cassis leading Bentivolio by 16 points. 16 points! 52% to 36%.

Cassis had a clear pathway to victory.  And it was going to take a serious investment to help out friend of liberty, Kerry Bentivolio.

But our poll also revealed one glaring weakness:

• If voters knew that Cassis had introduced the Michigan Business Tax, which raised taxes on businesses by 4.95% and killed thousands of jobs, more than 65% of them would be less likely to support her.

That was our window of opportunity. With two weeks to go, Liberty For All swung into action spending $658,000 on an aggressive campaign to expose Cassis’ record - 9 mail pieces, several rounds of phone calls, and a $390,000 media buy on Detroit TV.

Once voters knew that there was a clear choice in the race between a tax-raiser and liberty candidate, Cassis’ support sunk like a rock.  Kerry Bentivolio went on to win with over 60% of the vote.

But the fight isn’t over yet.

National Democrats plan to target this race and we know their lies and attacks are only getting started.  Those of us who are dedicated to advancing the cause of liberty are going to have to work overtime to make sure that Kerry -- a small business owner, veteran, and educator -- wins the general election.
