Dear EmailNation Subscriber,

Elder statesman of American letters and long-time Nation contributor Gore Vidal passed away July 31 at the age of 86. Vidal wrote as a citizen of the republic and a critic of the empire. Some of his most memorable quotes appeared in The Nation: "We are the United States of Amnesia," he wrote in 2004. "We learn nothing because we remember nothing." Jon Wiener has more.

All best,
Peter Rothberg, The Nation

IN OUR ORBIT

Two years ago, Pulitzer Prize winner Chris Hedges and award-winning cartoonist and journalist Joe Sacco set out for America's sacrifice zones, places like Camden, NJ and the coal fields of West Virginia, where the market place rules and human beings are ruthlessly exploited to maximize profit. Days of Destruction, Days of Revolt (Nation Books) is the searing account of their travels. In an interview on Bill Moyers' show, Moyers & Company, Hedges discussed the reality of our destructive economy and corporate-owned political system. In this video, Moyers and Hedges discuss the vast swaths of America "that have been destroyed for quarterly profit." Check out the book today.
