She was emphatic that she needed to get a feel for the 1st person tone, so I went ahead and sent her the draft of Ch 2, emphasizing repeatedly that this is a rough draft, doesn't even have Gregg's additions/corrections, etc.

It seems CRITICAL that you do a TOC now if you're going to open the book in a different perspective--my impulse would have been to run that change by her first, Barrett, given the importance of COS, but getting answers from her on anything seems always to slow things down... I can see advantages of saving COS till later--and I assume you guys are in agreement about this?--but you shouldn't be surprised if this throws her for a loop, because that's a big decision that's been made without any input from her, with only about 8 weeks before a complete manuscript is due... And you should be prepared for the possibility that she could kill the idea out-of-hand, simply out of concern that she's seen so little of the book and you've just made a fundamental change...

I'm not saying it's a bad idea, but it's going to have to be damn good, and it's going to have to be Gregg-centric nonetheless, Gregg-voiced... So you've put extra pressure on yourself, and now I'm going to have to turn in this new first chapter AND the TOC to her simultaneously. Let me see these ASAP, OK?

Working on a new version of the first chapter that will be fast-paced first person using the combined events of yesterday from Gregg's standpoint, instead of the Scientology evening originally planned, which would have been hard to do without going into a lot of expository as well. Should have partial draft in tomorrow. Do you have confirmation from Julia on how she wants the toc and any notes from you on how to improve the second chapter draft before turning in to her?
