It's really hard to say at this point because a lot will come down to "chance," from our standpoint, but this release could potentially cause a great deal of trouble for a number of institutions, beyond what's being supposed by most.

I have no idea; this is a much, much bigger data set than anyone has had to contend with previously. Once the e-mails themselves are released, though, several different parties are prepared to host along with search function.

Sounds reasonable to me. Thanks, Barrett. Any idea when we might see a searchable wiki with the email content?

It's possible. I don't know the exact process by which Stratfor was chosen over other institutions that have attracted more hostility from our direction. I do know that probes are regularly conducted against firms of interest, and that those exhibiting vulnerabilities will almost inevitably be targeted. I also know that there have been at least a couple of occasions in which an insider or former insider has provided us with info.

Hi Barrett, it looks to me like Mike Mooney might have had the motivation to speak to you regarding Stratfor prior to the breach (http://jeffreycarr.blogspot.com/2012/01/was-stratfor-breached-by-insider.html). I'm not saying that he did, but since you're both in Austin and since Stratfor was a bit of a weird target for Anonymous to take on out of the blue, I thought I'd just ask you directly. Off the record, of course.

Did Mike bring this to you?

Best,
Jeff
