Tuesday webinar/discussion/etcHi guys
Here’s an outline for the discussion on Tuesday/ Monday night Barrett’s time. I’ve allocated the first couple of issues just to get us started but it’s intended to be a conversation rather than an interview so you’re welcome to jump in at any stage. The overall themes are identifying the key threats to online freedom, the development and future of online activism, and what people can do to defend themselves and online freedom. Hopefully we’ll get some interesting questions from the audience as well. Any thoughts most welcome.
Admin details on the actual setup on Tuesday will be sent soon if they haven’t already. B
Setting the scene… What has 2011 revealed to us? 1. Government attacks on the internet and the role of the private sector – financial blockade on WikiLeaks, HBGary Federal, Romas/COIN, role of western companies in providing surveillance tech to Arab régimes - Barrett
2. Corporations and attacks on the internet – Facebook, Google and online privacy and anonymity - Mark
3. Corporate attacks and the role of governments – copyright law, ACTA, SOPA/ProtectIP - both
Connectedness and online activism 1. Has 2011 seen a breakthrough in the impact of online activism? - Mark for broad perspective, Barrett for evolution of Anonymous, emergence of #Occupy
2. The reaction of governments from dictatorships to democracies? Internet shutdowns, expansion of law enforcement and surveillance powers, harassment of activists – and Hillary Clinton’s spruiking and funding of net freedom. Is the internet ultimately a more effective tool for surveillance and manipulation than activism?
3. What’s the future for online activism?
Defending online freedom 1. What’s ultimately at stake here? Does the internet frontier “need to be civilized” anyway?
2. What can ordinary net users do to protect themselves? What sorts of toolkits are available to defend yourself and defend online freedom?
