Patrick: You buddies with Brett Kimberlin and/or Neal Rauhauser?
Patrick: You're not there?
me: yo
me: I've known Rauhauser vaguely for a few years
Patrick: Just curious
Patrick: Has he talked to you about me, by any chance? (He's not a fan of mine)
me: I'm aware he has a big thing regarding you but don't know the details
me: he has a series of ongoing squabbles that seem to have a lot of irritating backstory
Patrick: He seems to be setting himself up as a sort of Anonymous frontman -- the guy who (at least claims to) pick personal targets for them to hit
me: he is certainly trying, yes, but no one in Anon knows who he is
Patrick: He is going around telling lies about me in an effort to whip up hatred against me and persuade Anonymous people to hack me
Patrick: That's what I was curious about
Patrick: You seem to have stayed in touch with them, yes? To some degree
Patrick: He has this thing called "Anonymiss" that he keeps talking about, and he acts like he is their leader
me: yeah, but none of them know who you are, and Neal doesn't run Anonymiss, either
Patrick: You are aware of the efforts he is making to try to convince them that I am a bad guy who should be hacked, though, right?
me: he used to talk quite a bit about Anonymous on Daily Kos, but that's it
me: I'm generally aware that he's been trying to get Anonymous to pursue this thing of his, yes, but he doesn't go in IRC and is entirely unknown in Anon
me: which is why nothing has happened to you
Patrick: If anyone ever tried to target me for a hacking and you heard about it, would you tell me and/or try to dissuade people from doing it?
me: yes, but it won't come to that anyway
Patrick: Why do you say that?
me: because, again, no one listens to Neal, he's been calling for stuff for months and nothing has happened, Anon doesn't just attack things because some guy wants them to
Patrick: He constructs these narratives in which I am some kind of Bradley Manning hater (don't think I ever said a word about the guy pro or con), the "hacker" of Anthony Weiner (insane), etc. etc. etc.
me: yeah, I mostly ignore him and you should too
Patrick: I worry someone will stumble across his totally disingenuous and dishonest arguments and be persuaded
me: yeah, that happens to all of us
Patrick: Tell me this: in what way has he been trying to persuade Anonymous to hack me?
Patrick: Is he sending emails, chatting about it, what?
me: he occasionally sends an e-mail out to people, most of whom aren't Anons, and updates everyone on his battles, recently he claimed that Anon was going to come after you, whereas he's claimed the same thing before in other cases
Patrick: Would you feel uncomfortable forwarding those to me if I promised to keep them confidential?
Patrick: It's fine if you don't want to
Patrick: There is a reason I ask, though
me: sure, but they didn't come from me, I need this guy as a source occasionally for my own conflict against a bunch of firms and governments
Patrick: That's fine, they didn't come from you
Patrick: If I told you something could you keep it strictly confidential?
me: yeah, I have to do that a lot
Patrick: You're cool with me, right? You and I don't see eye to eye on everything but you seem like a decent human being who tries to do the right thing
me: of course
Patrick: You've heard of "swatting"?
me: not sure what it means, but have heard the term lately
Patrick: Prank phone call to the police, someone claims to be someone at a particular address, says they are armed and just shot someone
Patrick: Sends armed police to that address where an unsuspecting homeowner has no idea what is going on and is confronted by armed police at his front door
me: go on
Patrick: My family and I were victims of that
Patrick: Rauhauser jokes about it using assumed names on Twitter
Patrick: That's the reason I am concerned about his campaign
Patrick: Is that the only e-mail he has sent you about me or are there more? I would like to see all of them
me: looking, can't find any
me: oh, here's one more
Patrick: Yup. That one sounds just like him. You see the implicit threat against me
Patrick: " If they gig Anons to the point where they get beat down it's their own dumb fault, yes?"
Patrick: WTF does that mean?
me: it means "oh nose I hope they don't antagonize Anon"
Patrick: What about Brett Kimberlin? Rauhauser has teamed up with him. I am wondering if Kimberlin is trying to cultivate a relationship with Anonymous. Kimberlin is pissed off at me and "Liberty Chick" from Breitbart's sites because we pointed out Kimberlin's violent history
Patrick: He's clearly trying to get me hacked there in that e-mail, no?
Patrick: Jesus Christ. What did I ever do to this guy?
me: never heard of him, and "cultivating a relationship with Anonymous" is harder than it sounds
me: I wouldn't worry about it other than to report any illegal activity
Patrick: Kimberlin might have some street cred with Anonymous because he was one of the people the HBGary cretins were digging up info on
Patrick: What do you mean, other than to report any illegal activity?
me: as in, aside from reporting any illegal activity that you may suspect from these yahoos, you should probably refrain from wasting time on it
Patrick: That's tough to do given what happened
Patrick: I could have been killed
me: then spend a bunch of time on it, I guess
Patrick: What the hell does Rauhauser do for a living?
me: something with computers, I don't know
Patrick: Had you heard about what happened to me before I mentioned it?
me: also, I'm heading back to the bar, but will have blackberry if you still have questions
me: nope, hadn't
me: it's texas/ou weekend
Patrick: Ah
Patrick: I should know that
Patrick: Ashamed I don't, actually
Patrick: Well, thanks for forwarding those emails
Patrick: I guess I'm reassured?
me: no problem, good luck
Patrick: Thank you
me: you should be
Patrick: Final question: If there was an issue you would tell me, right? Be straight with me
Patrick: Still there?
