Its not the suit I care about, actually, but Id like you to wear a blazer. We need to project to these editors that you (as an author) have a professionalism that they wouldnt expect of you as a hacker, say. I know it sounds stupid, and obviously you can do what you prefer, but thats my vote. Jacket, shirt and jeans? Thats fine. Even Chuckie Taylorsso long as youve got jacket on top.
Sorry if it feels like Im in the role of Downpresser Man, but these publishers are a semi-squeamish group

I own some nice clothes that work in place of a suit, but I also own a suit if need be. I hate suits, the very idea of them aggravates me. I have a black suit only though.
I have really nice button up shirts that go well with black pants and a shirt that goes over them. Its what I have worn to some interviews.
