Dear Barrett, Dear Gregg—

As per our conversations today, I wanted to put down for the record the terms / splits you’ve both agreed to regarding compensation once we sell the book.  As discussed:

50-50 split on first $100k

60-40 split on next $150k

70-30 split above $250k, including royalties, foreign and film incomes, if any.

In case you don’t realize this,

A)      To be super clear, the splits above apply to gross dollars, before any commission is taken out.  Writers House takes 15% of every dollar that comes in (as is standard).

B)      Publisher’s contracts get paid out over time, with payments tagged to specific events.  So (for example) a $200,000 contract doesn’t mean we get $200,000 in one lump; instead it means we’d get (say) $50k on signature of the contract, $50k on delivery of the final ms., $50k on publication, and $50k on paperback publication.  So even a sizable publishing deal (and those are few & far between these days) still gets meted out in smaller increments.  Please don’t plan any Acapulco vacations.

C)      All joking aside?  It’s impossible to predict what the market will bear here, OK?  I have a good feeling about this, and I feel sure publishers will be interested, but we’ll only know for sure what the advance might be once we have the best possible proposal out there, and they actually read the thing and start to respond.  Till then, there’s no knowing…

D)      You guys need to formalize your relationship on this book via a Collaboration Agreement.   I’m drafting one that I’ll send you tomorrow, OK?

That’s all for now.  I’ll send you the Collab Agreement tomorrow.

Best,

Dan
