POLITICSIn Layman’s Terms: The Legality of Bombing LibyaPresident Obama recently made the argument that US military involvement in Libya does not require congressional approval, because it doesn’t fall under the War Powers Resolution. The main reason it doesn’t, he says, is that the kind of operations currently taking place in Libya do not amount to “hostilities,” the term used in that resolution. Republicans, unsurprisingly, are not taking this very well. |
LOVE AND MUSICSix Music Memories Of My FatherSo, I wrote about my mother and how she got inadvertently created a monster out of me by turning me onto the song: “The Art Teacher” by Rufus Wainwright. I did not, however, mention the songs that my father got me obsessed with. And since there are quite a few, and since they are very good songs, (obscure songs, said my dad when I was becoming aggravated, unable to find them on Youtube) I am going to tell you about them, in spirit of Father’s Day. |
POLITICSRussian Lessons for Commentators and OptimistsRussia will elect its next president in March of 2012, eight months before Americans go to the polls. As the younger, economic-reform-minded President Dmitri Medvedev continues to distance himself from ex-President/current-Prime Minister Vladimir Putin in public, the Western press keeps on writing stories about the “rift” between the men. Realistically, though, the supposed split and the press coverage it gets should serve as lessons for both our own political exuberance for “the new” and commentators’ abilities to develop narrative frames. |
MUSICWho is Kreayshawn?Kreayshawn is nothing you’ve seen before. A new artist from East Oakland, California and self-described “swag assassin,” Kreayshawn is preparing to take the music world by a marijuana clouded glitter storm. At the beginning of the month, Gawker touted the slang-smart star as being “on pace to succeed Ke$ha as the foremost white female rapper in popular music.” |
FICTIONWerner Herzog and Samuel L. Jackson Narrate Go the F**k to SleepUnless you have managed to completely avoid the internet for the past few months, you have probably heard about the “children’s book for adults” Go the F*ck to Sleep. The book went viral months before its actual release, but it can be found in bookstores now. |
