Howdy-

Nothing has yet turned up regarding any U.K. involvement in any of this except to the extent that Operation Earnest Voice is overseen by multinational forces which would presumably include the U.K. I'm doing a series of articles for al-Jazeera on my findings thus far pursuant not only to persona management but also Romas/COIN, a DoD project that conducts mass surveillance on the Arab world via social networking analysis and a series of other measures, and which I've found is to be replaced by another program called Odyssey at some point this year. It also turns out that persona management is more common than previously known. But no, nothing with a U.K. angle yet.

Dear Barrett,

I hope this finds you well. Sorry for the delay in getting back to you - the Native Voice team has been pretty nomadic over the last couple of weeks. I thought I'd drop you a line to see if anything had turned up vis-a-vis UK government connections to grey persona ops / social media hacking? Perhaps we could catch up again sometime soon...

Thanks so much.

Best wishes,

Theo

Certainly. If you'd like, you can let me know before you go on IRC and I'll accompany to you in order to assist in finding interview subjects.

As for persona management and how it may be currently used in conjunction with signals intelligence, we have established a sort of crowd-sourced intel op of our own by which to suss it all out. See this, and particulary the wiki and links page.

Dear Barrett,

Great to speak to you today. On behalf of myself and Phil, thanks so much for your time and for all the info - we really appreciate it. Thanks also for Gregg's email, we look forward to speaking with him. We're really interested in what you were saying about persona management, and certainly would be very keen to investigate further whether the UK govt/military-industrial establishment could be connected either to this trend or to accessing social media accounts for their own intel. Finally, would you be able to advise us about putting word out on the IRCs about our interest in making a film on hacking and conducting some interviews?

Thanks again for your help Barrett. Let's stay in touch.

Best wishes,

Theo

Gregg, Theo-

Gregg, Theo is with a documentary outfit that's looking to do a BBC documentary. He has questions about the hacking culture that I'm not equipped to answer. Let him know if you have a moment to speak.

We could do it now if you like via Skype; otherwise, let me know what time would work.

Hi Barrett,

Thanks for your prompt response. Skype or phone would probably be best. When would be convenient for you? I have cc-ed my director Phil into the thread to ensure that he is also able to participate.

Best wishes,

Theo.

Certainly. Did you want to talk via e-mail or phone or Skype?

Dear Barrett,

Apologies for contacting you out of the blue - my name is Theo Hessing. I work for an independent film production company called Native Voice Films (www.nativevoicefilms.com) in East London.

The reason I'm writing is because we recently came across some of your articles about Anonymous - in the Guardian and Daily Kos - with great interest. We're in the process of developing an idea for a BBC Storyville documentary that looks at those involved in internet security and hacking - the exact outline of which is still being explored, as we work out what sort of access is possible to relevant and interesting contributors. As such, we were wondering whether you might have time to chat briefly with us to discuss some of your ideas further?

We're particularly interested to hear more about the community of hackers beyond the usual stereotype expounded by 'expert' talking heads, and thought you might well be able to provide some valuable insights to help direct our research. The intention with all our films is to let people tell their stories for themselves, not for any kind of expose or investigative critique - for some examples please have a look at our website.

Thanks for your time, and I look forward to hearing from you.

Best wishes,

Theo.
