Hillsdale College -- Revive the Constitution and Defend Liberty

Dear Patriotic American,

My name is Dr. Larry Arnn. I am the President of Hillsdale College. Throughout history, there is no document more important as a guarantor of our liberty than the U.S. Constitution.

Yet, like many patriotic Americans, you might not own a personal copy of this timeless treasure. I'd like to send you a copy at no cost to you.

All I ask of you to receive your own Take our survey to receive a no-cost Constitution Booklet and subscription to Imprimiscopy of the Constitution is that you complete our 2011 National Survey on America's Leadership Crisis, the Assault on American Liberty, and the Purpose of an Education.

I'll explain more about the importance of this survey in a moment. But first, to reclaim our vanishing liberties, I also believe it is critical to send a copy of the Constitution to:

  • Members of Congress and
    their staffs;

  • Members of the Obama Administration;

  • Government officials;

  • Influential members of the
    media; and

  • Educators.

Many of these so-called gatekeepers of our society do not seem to understand or cherish the Constitution and the timeless principles of liberty championed by our Founding Fathers. Judging by the big government agenda they are foisting on the American people, these "reformers" could use an education in constitutional limits placed upon government

With your help, Hillsdale College has plans to give it to them -- sooner rather than later!

Hillsdale College also publishes IMPRIMIS - one of the nation's most widely circulated digests of liberty. IMPRIMIS is dedicated to educating citizens and promoting civil religious liberty by covering cultural, economic, political and educational issues of enduring significance. You can order your no-cost subscription here.

AS A FREE PEOPLE, WE HAVE NEVER BEEN CLOSER TO BECOMING SUBJECT TO A BUREAUCRATIC DESPOTISM THAN WE ARE TODAY.

Many members of Congress and of the Obama Administration, either by design or as a result of ignorance, seem intent on shredding the Constitution, destroying our free market system, and ultimately taking away individual liberty in favor of centralized government control.

Just look at what has transpired since the 2008 election.

  • Thanks to the ill-advised bailouts, the federal government has for all practical purposes taken over our country's banking industry. (When several executives attempted to repay TARP money in order to regain control of their own banks, the Obama Administration refused the repayments!)

  • The federal government now has a controlling stake in one of the nation's largest insurance conglomerates. (Now after having approved corporate bonuses for its executives, Congress is punishing them for accepting the bonuses!)

  • The federal government has nationalized one of the nation's largest auto manufacturers, and is running it for the benefit of left-wing labor unions and environmentalists.

But we should not despair. Why? My answer to you is simple: I sincerely believe we can...

REVIVE THE CONSTITUTION AND REVERSE THE
SLIDE TOWARD BUREAUCRATIC DESPOTISM!

This is why your 2011 National Survey on America's Leadership Crisis, the Assault on American Liberty, and the Purpose of an Education answers are so valuable.

We want to demonstrate to these political, media, and educational leaders that most Americans want an education that includes American history, teaches the importance of the Constitution to liberty, and supports the moral principles most families teach at home -- instead of undermining what most Americans believe in.

But we won't be able to accomplish this by sitting on our hands! It will take a renewed focus on education - of our friends, neighbors, and coworkers - in the Constitution and the restoration of its authority in order to protect our hard-won liberty.

Unlike almost all other colleges, Hillsdale refuses all federal taxpayer subsidies because we don't want government bureaucrats telling Hillsdale who we must hire, who we must admit for enrollment (even if they don't meet Hillsdale's tough academic standards), or what we can teach.

We have already seen how the federal government has corrupted education in America with all kinds of "political correctness" requirements. And we don't want that for Hillsdale.

Unless more Americans champion the cause of liberty and arm themselves with the kind of knowledge found in the pages of IMPRIMIS, we will not be able to regain control of our government from the bureaucrats and return it to the people, to whom it rightfully belongs. Please arm yourself today with a no-charge subscription to IMPRIMIS.

Hillsdale College operates by a principle that has apparently escaped corporate America: DO NOT RELINQUISH YOUR INDEPENDENCE IN EXCHANGE FOR TAXPAYER DOLLARS! Hillsdale refuses to accept a dime of state or federal taxpayer money. In this way, we have been able to keep teaching the American Constitution, free market economics and the timeless principles of Western civilization and our American heritage.

Like Abraham Lincoln, who said, "The legitimate object of government, is to do for a community of people, whatever they need to have done, but can not do, at all, or can not, so well do, for themselves," Hillsdale believes that the federal government should be a limited government. In other words...

IF THE CONSTITUTION DOES NOT PERMIT THE GOVERNMENT
TO DO SOMETHING, IT SHOULD NOT DO IT!

The Constitution is based on the premise that Americans should be self-governing. It is not the role of the federal government to manage the automobile industry or to dictate what kind of cars we are allowed to drive. It should concentrate on the things we cannot do ourselves and duties it is assigned by the Constitution, such as national defense.

Unfortunately, many groups today have an agenda that would require us to violate the limits set on government by the Constitution. They disregard the principles of the American founding and run roughshod over the Constitution. If we don't stop them, we will lose the legacy of our forefathers that Americans have defended for over 225 years.

To continue to subvert the Constitution will lead to a bureaucratic despotism, whereby unwary citizens surrender their God-given rights and become subject to a paternalistic government. History tells us that a people who strike this deal not only lose their freedom, but their safety and prosperity as well.

Hillsdale's curriculum is dedicated to "pursuing truth and defending liberty." Every Hillsdale student, regardless of their major, is required to study the principles of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution so they learn to love and defend freedom. As an extension of this educational mission, I am proud to announce that...

HILLSDALE COLLEGE HAS INVADED CAPITOL HILL!

I am speaking of the new Allan P. Kirby, Jr. Center for Constitutional Studies and Citizenship. This new Center, while retaining undergraduate education as its central focus, aims to educate our elected officials and other policy makers. It will also give Americans nationwide the opportunity to gain an increased knowledge and deeper understanding of the American model of self-government.

In addition to seminars and other educational events held in our nation's capital, the Kirby Center will...

  • Provide free online programs to the public on the Constitution and America's founding principles.

  • Educate our national leaders, especially members of Congress, their staffs, and other policy makers in how constitutional principles should frame our nation's debates about public policy.

  • Serve as a home base for Hillsdale College students serving as interns in the Congressional offices, think tanks and policy institutes in Washington, D.C.

In short, the mission of Hillsdale's Kirby Center is to...

PRESERVE THE BLESSINGS OF LIBERTY FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS.

I firmly believe that we are at a critical crossroads. We can choose to remain a free, self-governing people ruled by law. Or, we can become subjects ruled by government bureaucrats who think they know what is best for each and every citizen.

Like most Americans, you value liberty. But in these troubled times, that isn't enough. You must defend liberty -- or lose it! Now is the time to let your voice be heard loud and clear. Please join with Hillsdale College to help our citizens reclaim the liberties that are being lost. Become a supporter of our Allan P. Kirby, Jr. Center for Constitutional Studies and Citizenship.

Costs of operations and outreach for the Kirby Center will be high. But the costs of letting our elected leaders run roughshod over the Constitution are much higher. Freedom, once lost, is hard to regain. Only by teaching the timeless principles of liberty to of all Americans will the present and future prosperity of our nation be assured.

I realize that there are many worthy causes to which you could contribute. But...

THERE IS NO GREATER CHAMPION
OF LIBERTY THAN HILLSDALE COLLEGE.

Please join this noble cause today by contributing a tax-deductible gift of $25 ... $50 ... $100 or more to Hillsdale College and it's Allan P. Kirby, Jr. Center for Constitutional Studies and Citizenship. With your help, Hillsdale College would like to send out thousands of booklets containing the entire text of the Constitution to elected officials, journalists, educators and other cultural and political gatekeepers of our country. On the cover will be a sticker that reads, "We the people hold you accountable to the U.S. Constitution."

Along with your no-cost subscription to IMPRIMIS, I would also like to send you a U. S. Constitution booklet. It will be a lasting reminder that you took a stand for freedom and helped extend the gift of freedom to future generations.

Your generosity at this critical time in our nation's history will enable Hillsdale College to reach more Americans, including our national leaders, with the crucial knowledge of our constitutional heritage, and correct, through education, the misguided belief that government can ever replace the blessings of freedom and individual responsibility.

Now more than ever, Hillsdale College needs your support. Sadly, you are forced to pay your tax dollars to colleges and universities that are opposed to just about everything you hold sacred. Now's your chance to give of your own freewill to a college that shares your principles and refuses all state and federal taxpayer support - Hillsdale College.
