If you get big dumps of docs there is a tool called SciSplore - it's an add on to FreeMind. It chokes when you try to feed it 1,500 items :-)

If you're using FreeMind it's worth looking at http://thebrain.com - it'll read FreeMind and it's got a much richer feature set, but a steeper learning curve.

You didn't say anything about Foca - it's got a free edition, it's easy to use as just a document gathering system. I've been doing audits for Progressive orgs - got started after I saw the two data dump things last weekend.

spambox.us will generate temporary email addresses - useful for signing up for stuff w/o leaving a trail.

I see a couple of things in here that are interesting to me ...

Here's a great list of free tools that I'm encouraging Anons to learn how to use as I'm trying to get people ready to start doing crowd-sourced research on corrupt entities in order to prompt media focus and otherwise overwhelm our enemies with scandals. You yourself probably don't need many of these but pass on to anyone who might: http://pastebin.com/UYzydAKq

Yeah, I saw that, pulled it, am applying the method to the other HBG mails. You knew I was reading that stuff in detail, had not figured how to get at the attachments - invaluable.

Big troll, trolling madly. Good ideas - some of the Wisconsin kids are trying to figure how to get that stuff distributed unencrypted, looking for hosting, etc. I am going to help them.

This would all be a lot easier if the DoJ would just do it's freakin' job.

So, the person who did it took responsibility and explained that his intent was to draw attention to the entities in question and prompt people to read through the data while also learning "tradecraft," etc. Weird stuff. Now he's compiled all of the attachments from the HBGary e-mails and put them in a torrent; cc'd them to me, Aaron Barry, Penny Hoglund, etc.

Word is it's all stuff you can get at with Google, but not all of it is stuff they meant to be read in detail by the public. Lawyers are already checking one thing from Mackinac from what I hear.

People are saying these are all publicly accessible documents. What's the story?

Don't do crimes, Barrett Brown. But do encourage people to dig deeply into this - there have to be some juicy tidbits, and getting Progressives keeping an eye on those groups will be a huge win.

Yeah, he alerted me last night, am downloading now. I'm particularly excited about ALEC - they're the ones who successfully pushed for private prisons, and I'm about ready to stick it to the fucking man again. Will get back to you soon.

Earlier tonight a Twitter user @septscelles announced a datadump from the American Legislative Exchange Council, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, and the Mackinac Center. My copy isn't here yet, but someone else has theirs and I'm hearing about over a thousand documents, mostly PDFs.

Attached is the torrent control file you'll need to get at the content. If you are on Windows you will want to find something called utorrent - load the program, download the file, then open it. The utorrent program will run for several hours, when it reaches 100% you will have a directory in your downloads with three files in it.

One of the files is a text press release, the other two are encrypted archives. You will need a program called TrueCrypt to open the archives. The large one has data in it and the password is "Barrett Brown". The smaller encrypted file is also labeled as a press release and the password for this is not known - it will apparently be released later.

I am very curious to see what the community will do with this content. Let me know if you have any trouble opening the archive - I've been using TrueCrypt for some stuff and it can be a handful if you have never used a disk encryption utility.
