Good catch, it was actually just coincidence - or perhaps the fact that I mentioned I was now paying attention to Mentions prompted the party to use that to get my attention. At any rate I'm now in communication with those responsible; I'm actually in favor of their aims.

Follow my line of thought. On 30 April Septcelles @ mentioned you regarding the COC dump - the only way that your attention would be assured regarding his tweets is if you were checking your @ mentions - otherwise you wouldn't have seen his tweets unless you were following him. 

So is there a chance you were directed somehow to notice your @mentions coincidentally a few days before Septcelles needed to you to notice him? 

If you were, there may be a link between whoever pointed out the @mentions tab and the subsequent dump *trap*.
