Dear Barrett Brown, Exciting news! Secular Student Alliance members Jeff Hawkins and Janet Strauss know that the Secular Student Alliance is adding new campus groups every week. They also understand that if we want secular values represented in the courtrooms, boardrooms and council rooms of tomorrow, we have to organize secular voices in the classrooms today. To that end, Jeff and Janet are challenging existing and potential SSA supporters to fund the expansion of the secular student movement with a burst of giving worthy of the impressive growth we’ve had. Specifically, they are offering a $100,000 matching offer! All increases in 2011 giving over 2010 giving will be matched dollar for dollar. Here’s what that means for you:
Jeff Hawkins, inventor of the PalmPilot and author of On Intelligence, told us, “Janet and I consider supporting the Secular Student Alliance to be an essential investment in our nation’s future. Secular student groups give our youth the confidence to promote secular causes and to counter the demonization of atheists and secular advocates. The organization leading this generational change is the Secular Student Alliance.” The Secular Student Alliance exists to create a world where secular students are respected voices in public discourse and vital partners in the secular movement's charge against irrationality and dogma. We do this by supporting high school and college groups that advance secular values. Because the student leaders we support give so much of their time and talent already, we don’t ask their groups to pay for our services. When a new group joins the SSA, it does so for free. More groups mean we’re doing very well at realizing our mission—but it doesn’t mean more money to support them. Our work relies entirely on the support of our members and a small handful of foundations. About half of our members are students, but the other half are not. Giving every college and high school student access to a secular student group is our vision for advancing secular values – and the only thing that allows us to pursue this vision is strong financial backing from everyone who shares it. Won’t you be a part of our historic growth? If you’re an existing member of the Secular Student Alliance, we’ll soon be getting in touch with you to remind you how much you gave in 2010. Any increase in 2011 will be matched by Jeff and Janet. If you start supporting us for the first time this year or revive your pre-2010 giving, then 100% of your gift will be matched. This will go on until we reach $100,000 or 2011 ends. Please make a generous donation today to fuel the secular student movement. |
