An Evening With Wayne Barrett and Tom Robbins
|
Tuesday, February 15th
CUNY Graduate School of Journalism
219 W 40 Street (7th & 8th)
6:30PM: refreshments, socializing
7:00PM to 9:00PM: program
Lately of the Village Voice, Barrett and Robbins recently departed the storied weekly, abruptly. Neither reporter has said much in public about the circumstances
but there has been plenty of aghast chatter about the magnitude of the loss and what it might mean not only for the Voice but for informed, competent, incisive, big city
journalism.
Both men will visit the New York Press Club next week to talk about their recent experiences and to field questions about the many issues facing journalists, their craft,
and their employers at a time when the game for all is fundamentally changing.
Moderator: Juliet Papa, 1010 WINS.
Free admission for New York Press Club members (RSVP required).
Non-members: $15, Students: $5. Visit our Website for more information and to reserve.

Al Jazeera English to Broadcast a Special From Columbia J-School
|
Friday, February 11th
2:45PM
Columbia Journalism School
116 Street & Broadway
The Al Jazeera EnglishTV news network has had a difficult time finding a home on U.S. cable TV for its 24/7 coverage, primarily of news from the Middle East.
The reluctance to carry the well-regarded service is perplexing given this country's deep involvement and commitments in the region and the inconsistent
coverage there by U.S. broadcast networks.
In what amounts to an outreach event, Al Jazeera English will broadcast a "live" TV special from the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism this Friday,
featuring senior political analyst, Marwan Bishara. In addition to engaging members of the audience on the topic, "The Power of Information," Bishara will moderate a guest
panel that includes Amy Goodman: Host and Executive Producer of Democracy Now!, Evgeny Morozov: Author of The Net Delusion: The Dark Side Of
Internet Freedom, Emily Bell: Former editor-in-chief of Guardian.co.uk, and Clay Shirky: Professor of New Media, New York University. The event is free
and open to the public.
More information can be found on the Columbia University Calendar site.

New York Press Club Spring "Mixer" at Blondies Bar
|
Tuesday, April 5th
6:00PM - 9:00PM
Blondies Bar
212 W 79 (B'way & Amsterdam)
In early April, spring will be in the air and attentions will be diverted from slush aplenty to...plenty of slushies! The ideal moment for our first mixer of the new year.
Maybe you saw the TV "live shots" from Blondies Bar on that fateful night not long ago when the football Jets couldn't quite overcome that other team and were
again denied a Super Bowl berth.
Drowned sorrows notwithstanding, the TV vignettes spoke volumes about the popularity of Blondies as a great place to meet and greet. Which is exactly the point of Press Club mixers.
Join colleagues and friends for socializing and elbow-bending on April 5th (no cover, no minimum, no RSVP, sports-talk optional, non-members welcome). Hope to see you there!
