May 15, 2007 – Presidential Candidate Ron Paul took to the stage at the GOP Debate in Columbia, South Carolina, where he withstood unanimous opposition from fellow candidates regarding his views on foreign policy. The tensions mounted as Paul engaged in what became an infamous showdown with former NYC Mayor Rudy Giuliani.
While others espoused increasingly interventionist measures in the face of terrorist threats, Paul steadfastly contended that such policies had been the cause of our problems in the first place, as he rebutted Giuliani:
“If we think that we can do what we want around the world and not incite hatred, then we have a problem. They don’t come here to attack us because we’re rich and we’re free. They come and they attack us because we’re over there.” – Ron Paul
On May 24, 2007, in the wake of the heated exchange, Congressman Paul held a press conference in which he presented a reading list of books to help Rudy Giuliani better understand the consequences of an unconstitutional foreign policy.
The list included a book entitled Dying to Win: The Strategic Logic of Suicide Terrorism by Robert Pape, an authority on suicide terrorism.
Over 3 years later, Pape has followed up on his previous work, giving a more in-depth explanation for the same confrontational topic: Cutting the Fuse: The Explosion of Global Suicide Terrorism and How to Stop It.
Campaign for Liberty had the opportunity to catch up with Robert Pape to discuss the release of his new book.
