Friend of Freedom: Ever since Jared Loughner opened fire at a Safeway store in Tucson, liberals have been trying to use that tragedy to further abrogate our Second Amendment rights. The media is joining in, trying to blame current gun laws for the senseless actions of a madman. The Second Amendment Foundation needs your help. Please read this important message. A special message from:
![]() Moments after Jared Loughner went on a shooting rampage at a Tucson grocery store on January 8th, media pundits began trying to blame conservatives for the attack (even though Loughner was a mentally ill anarchist who listed The Communist Manifesto and Mein Kampf as two of his favorite books). First, the media and the political talking heads said it was because of our "rhetoric." When that didn't work, they started blaming gun laws. They are escalating their attacks on gun rights, hoping to push their Liberal agenda in the wake of this horrible tragedy that killed six innocent people and injured thirteen. Remember, it was Obama's former Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel who famously said during the banking meltdown, "You don't ever want a crisis to go to waste; it's an opportunity to do important things that you would otherwise avoid." Here is their crisis: a 22 year-old cultish pothead with an Obama bumper sticker on his car, wielding a gun in a parking lot at a Tucson-area grocery store. Oops... the leftwing media forgot to report about the Obama bumper sticker on Lougner's car even though several of his neighbors told them. Because, minus the bumper sticker, this was just the crisis they needed to silence their conservative critics and take away our Second Amendment rights. They have labeled you the enemy because you believe in the Constitution and cherish the right to own a gun. Surprisingly, so does the woman Loughner targeted---Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords. She is a staunch gun-rights advocate. Was she the enemy, too? Here at the Second Amendment Foundation we are escalating our efforts to protect the Second Amendment as a flurry of anti-gun legislation hits the floor of both the House and Senate. We will continue to fight just as passionately as ever for this country we love, and the vision of our Founding Fathers as outlined by the Constitution and Declaration of Independence. That's why we are asking for your help today. With a tsunami of anti-gun legislation flooding Congress, we are going to have our hands full. Will you consider a a "tsunami donation" right now to the Second Amendment Foundation so we can keep fighting for your gun rights? The media has made it clear they are not going to stop the constant drumbeat of anti-gun, anti-freedom statements. We need your financial help to counter these attacks and make sure we don't let this crisis be the one that gives Obama the momentum to finally take away our gun freedoms. Representatives Gary Ackerman, Carolyn McCarthy and Peter King have all put forth gun control legislation in the wake of the shootings. Dennis Henigan, a vice president with the Brady Campaign, says, "We think that this horrific tragedy demands that Congress address the weaknesses in our gun laws." The media, predictably, fully supports this legislation and will slant their stories to push a specific agenda and mislead the public. They haven't mentioned, of course, that Americans do not want to lose their Second Amendment rights. Support for gun control has dropped 9 points since 2007; support for assault weapons bans has dropped 7 points; and support for banning handguns altogether has dropped 7 points. Yet Liberals and the media are still trying to make a connection between legitimate gun owners and psychotic criminals. The problem is never the weapon; it is the person in control of the weapon.
You and I know that banning guns is only going to make law-abiding citizens less safe and criminals more dangerous. Criminals and mentally insane individuals are not going to adhere to gun laws! Restrictions on our Second Amendment freedoms only hurt law-abiding citizens like you and me. "What happened in Tucson was not a failure of gun control laws. This was a failure of the mental health system," said Lawrence Keane, general counsel of the National Shooting Sports Foundation. Last weekend, both ABC and NBC ran stories fretting over the Crossroads of the West Gun Show in Tucson. ABC said viewers should not hold their breath waiting for Congress to pass more gun control laws; NBC pointed out that it is legal to carry concealed weapons in Arizona, "just as Loughner did last Saturday." I can assure you we here at the Second Amendment Foundation will not allow the media to use Tucson as a WEAPON against us. An even more tragic result of these shootings would be allowing a minority, led by the media, to enact laws that will forever eradicate our Constitutional freedoms. We must fight back against these knee-jerk reactions, and preserve our rights. I hope I can count on your support. Respectfully, ![]() Alan M. Gottlieb Chairman Second Amendment Foundation P. S. The mainstream print and broadcast media have run countless stories pushing for stricter gun regulations, ever since they realized that blaming conservatives for their political speech wasn't being taken seriously by the American people. It's time to stop them in their tracks with this anti-gun rhetoric, as well! Please help the Second Amendment Foundation with our media efforts. Your donation will make a big difference.
