Barrett,

On January 21, 2010 -- one year ago today -- the Supreme Court strengthened the special interests' grip on our government and political process with a dangerous ruling.

That ruling overturned more than 100 years of election law to allow special interests almost unlimited freedom to influence elections.

Some of my fellow senators and I responded by proposing the DISCLOSE Act, because Democracy Is Strengthened by Casting Light On Spending in Elections. Tens of thousands of people signed on as citizen co-sponsors, and we came just a couple votes short of passing it in the Senate.

Now we need to fight as hard as we can to pass it before the next election, and that means we need to start building support now.

Will you help repair the damage from the Supreme Court's ruling a year ago today by signing on as a citizen co-sponsor of the DISCLOSE Act now?

When the Supreme Court handed down its ruling, I warned immediately that it was dangerous.

Sure enough, the top three corporate campaigning groups alone spent over $84 million on elections last year. That's not counting all the other groups that spent less or the special interests that spent without going through a group.

And none of that money is traceable by the public.

The citizens of our democracy have a right to know who is spending what to influence their vote, but it's going to be harder than ever to force special interests to disclose their election spending.

That's why we each need to stand up as individuals with a voice in this democracy and demand to shine a light on special interest spending -- become a citizen co-sponsor of the DISCLOSE Act today.

Thanks for your support,

Chuck Schumer
