When I acquired my first farm, in the mountains on the Virginia/West Virginia border, I failed at first to understand why my neighbors named horses "Traveler."  I was living amidst the culture you describe, and yes, the nostalgia was uncomplicated: no recognition was voiced that the cause had not been noble.

And if you want to see a gaudy-ass tomb, visit Lee's floodlit sarcophagus behind the altar of the otherwise modest chapel at Washington & Lee University.
