For how I could serve best, it perhaps depends on how you define “writer” and “scientific consultant to a writer”. I can see myself contributing in the following ways:

If you have people who have lots of knowledge on a scientific topic and a need or desire to write something on that topic, I can serve as either a writer to whom they supply the rough content or as an editor to whom they supply fairly workable drafts. In this case, I would be most helpful if the writing is intended for a general or layperson audience. I’ve done a small amount of editing for highly technical writing (such as a chemical engineering thesis), but I don’t think I’m as interested in contributing that way. I’m more interested in helping get better information to the general public.

I don’t know that I could serve as a scientific consultant to a writer since my actual school education has not been in science all that much. However, I consider myself a decent researcher in terms of checking information and am relatively comfortable (for a layperson) with a wide range of scientific or technical topics.

If I’m helping as an editor, I would be comfortable on a wider variety of topics than just the climate science and evolution/biology ones I mentioned earlier. You could add to this list environmental issues in general, and anthropology/archaeology topics.

Hi, Mark-

Thanks for getting in touch. I'll go ahead and put you in our database of science/journalism project contributors. Are you interested in serving as a writer or a scientific consultant to a writer? Either way, I'll try to pair you up with someone with complementary interest in either biology/evolution or climate science; let me know if there are any other areas you have interest or expertise in as well.

Also, if you'd like to get further involved in Project PM or just want to learn more about what we're doing, let me know and I'll send you some further documentation.

I’d like to throw my hat into the ring as someone interested in helping on this project. I’m not sure how much or to what extent I can contribute, but I do have some skills and interests that apply. Whether I have the right skills you’re looking for or whether I have enough time might be another matter.

I’m currently working as a technical writer in the software industry. My education includes a B. A. and Ph. D. in English. I was an assistant professor for  5 years at a 4-year college, teaching research paper writing and introductory literature courses. I follow a couple of science topics very closely – climate science and evolution (and their battles against doubters). You can see a sample of my own writing  by searching for diaries by “marcellus” at Daily Kos.

If there might be a role for me, please don’t hesitate to contact me at mark.ludwig@us.lawson.com.

thanks
