IHS Welcomes Sabastain Valez
IHS is committed to information and practices meant to address the socio-political, economic and cultural challenges facing human communities. At The Institute we view humanism as having the moral imperative to extend the circle of justice, caring and concern to all.
IHS supports its mission by developing creative partnerships with other organizations; sponsoring conferences; producing books, working papers and other research documents; providing expertise on humanism to the media, policy makers, and other stakeholders; and by developing community-based projects.
IHS is working to bring together top scholars from a variety of disciplines, whose expertise and insights will help shape and inform the humanist movement in the following areas:
1. Politics
2. Social Advancement
3. Religion and Spirituality
4. Economics
5. Global Humanism
6. Sciences and Medical Developments
7. Energy and the Environment
8. Culture and Cultural Production
We at the Institute for Humanist Studies are pleased to announce that IHS has moved one step closer to fulfilling its mission by the recent addition of Sebastian Velez to our corps of Senior Fellows.
Sebastian Velez is a PhD candidate in Evolutionary Biology at Harvard University, where he teaches Invertebrate Evolution, Systematics, Human Physiology and Genetics. He has received numerous teaching and academic awards, including awards from the National Science Foundation, the Harvard College Levenson Award for Excellence in Teaching, and the Diversity Scholar award from American Institute of Biological Sciences. At Harvard, he also holds positions as Resident Tutor and Assistant Resident Dean at Kirkland House. Sebastian holds a Master's degree in Genetics from the University of Notre Dame, and has published numerous peer-reviewed journal articles in the field of Evolutionary Biology. Sebastian is also the director of Children of the Border, an NGO in the Dominican Republic and Haiti based on Humanist values, and dealing with issues of Human Rights and Health Care for children, pre- and post-natal care for women, and distribution of contraceptives. He frequently speaks on issues of Humanism and activism, including plenary talks at the World Humanist Congress and the American Humanist Association conference, where in 2010 he was awarded the AHA Distinguished Service Award for his work in relief efforts to the victims of the January 2010 earthquake.
IHS is on the forefront of building a place for nontheists in American society and standing up to dangerous religious fundamentalists, but we can't do it without you.
Donate now to double your contribution.
Our founder, Larry Jones, has issued a $55,000 matching grant challenge!
To help us keep our organization growing strong, we need your support to meet this challenge and I urge you to contribute to this important cause.
Please note that IHS is a 501 (c) (3) organization and your contributions are tax deductible.
Thank you for helping us make our mission of bringing the humanist perspective to our nation's public policy discussion a reality!
Sincerely,
Diane Griffin,
Managing Director
