An enraged man abducts his estranged wife and child, holding them hostage in a secluded mountain cabin and threatening to kill them both. A right-wing survivalist with a cache of weapons resists calls to surrender. A drug trafficker barricades himself and his family in a railroad car and begins shooting. As the FBI’s chief negotiator, Gary Noesner has worked on some of the world’s most well-known hostage cases, including the hijacking of the Achille Lauro cruise ship and the siege of the Branch Davidian compound in Waco, Texas. In his new book, Stalling for Time: My Life as an FBI Negotiator, he gives an eyewitness account of some of the most critical situations he and his unit encountered during his 30-year career with the FBI.

Following his retirement from the FBI in 2003, Gary Noesner became a senior vice president with Control Risks, an international consultancy. Noesner has appeared on numerous television documentaries produced by A&E, the History Channel, Discovery, TLC, and National Geographic. He is the founder of the National Council of Negotiation Associations, which represents about 18 organizations and thousands of law enforcement negotiators nationwide.
