Everything thats wrong with america encompassed perfectly in one e-mail.
Lets see: unqualified hack who got into society by marrying rich? Check.
Society accepting him despite his recidivist views, because he married in? Check.
Unqualified legacy daughter gets plum job for Vanity Fair despite being a lousy writer? Check.
Most Important Intellectual Center rewards said family with plum appointments and jobs despite lack of qualifications? Check.
Faux Polite call and response by otherwise edgy editor and writer, both of whom know better than to actually rock any boats? Checkmate.
(no offense on the last one, Im just saying that you need the work as well. And remember, rupert murdoch has put literally millions of dollars into my or my friends pockets through my projects over the years. Im in the shaded part of the douchebag circle in this particular venn diagram).Graydon Carter likewise shot down a piece I wrote on Richard Cohen because Cohen is a "friend of the magazine." Check this out as well. Vanity Fair is famously bad about this kind of shit, but of course one encounters it everywhere.

Hey Barrett,
Martys daughter Evgenia is one of our contributors, so I think Ill have to pass on the chance to chop him down to size.
Might be late for Value Voters, but let me know if you have anything stellar.
Cheers,
M
Howdy-
Got caught up this week and haven't had time to do that Value Voters Summit piece; let me know if you still want it.
Otherwise, you may have noticed that Martin Peretz, perennial editor at The New Republic, recently got himself in trouble due to having written some over-the-top insults <http://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2010/09/more-on-muslim-life-is-cheap/63201/> directed towards Muslims and asserting that the First Amendment ought not apply to them. I did a whole chapter on Peretz for my upcoming book but still have plenty of notes left over; let me know if you'd like to take a look at a piece on him akin to the Thomas Friedman and Charles Krauthammer articles.
