Pretty wacky. Davis was mostly just introducing other speakers, a couple of whom were not chosen particularly well. Bill Metzger, this goofy fellow who was elected to replace his mom as DCCCD board of trustees members earlier this year, started his speech by noting that he'd written down some remarks but now he realizes that none of that matters because he's here for one reason and one reason only, "My Lord and Savior Jesus Christ!" He ended with a minute-long build-up/intro to his closing remarks, a rhyme taught to him by his father, "Be a star, vote straight (R)," which sort of contradicted Davis' more reasoned, earlier exhortation that people only vote in the right kind of Republicans. I interviewed Ray Myers, Kaufman Country Tea Party Patriots founder, who ended by explaining that if I wrote something he didn't say he'd find me and get me or some such. A woman was told she had to leave because she had a pro-Obama sign. Another woman stood outside to protest with a sign that said "Haters Killed JFK" while wearing a Klu Klux Klan robe; later, a soccer coach came out and asked her if she'd mind moving because some kids had run inside and told him the the KKK was there. Anyway, I recorded a good portion of the audio. All in all, I talked to a couple of reasonable people there and there weren't any racist signs or anything, so thinking of starting the piece with a summary of the event and noting that there are clearly quite a number of decent and moderately well-informed people involved with this movement (at least in Dallas) and that they're not explicitly racist and neither is Davis, but that the problem is a lot of them don't really seem to know what they're talking about because people like Davis are the most cogent voices they have, then go into further background on the guy and follow up with 700-800 words of him contradicting himself or being disingenuous or what have you. Going through his column archives now, and will send him an e-mail a bit later today.
