I've promised a friend I'd meet her at the beer garden in Astoria in a bit, but I'll call after... Probably around 8ish. Where in Bushwick are you?Date: Sat, 15 May 2010 17:02:59 -0400To: <jloudis@gmail.com>Subject: Re: I'm a fan of diplomacy.Sure, I don't have any plans lined up. As I may have mentioned, I'm staying with some old friends until my new apartment is ready at the end of the month, and they've got a nifty place here. Would you be interested in coming over here and drinking vodka on the porch, the backyard, or the roof? Or a combination of the three? Just finishing up some paperwork/correspondence related to the media project and watching this show with my friend and his girlfriend in which this clever English chef tells various semi-literate restaurant owners how badly they've fucked up and then they defend themselves by way of various ridiculous platitudes. Let me know if you'd like to meet up next week when you're a bit freer. Was living in Williamsburg with an old friend of mine just for a few months as sort of a stop-gap measure; previously, I had acquired two ridiculous roommates who couldn't pay their rent and whom I thus had to blow all my money supporting, but finally pulled the plug on that apartment and moved in with my old friend/entertainment lawyer. But she's moving back to Texas at some point after the summer, it turns out, so can't get a lease with her, so staying with some other old friends for a couple weeks until I have time to find another place of my own. Happened to have been ridiculously busy lately so couldn't swing getting a place lined up for this month on short notice. Also, I hate looking at apartments. On Mon, May 10, 2010 at 10:56 PM, Jessica Loudis <jloudis@gmail.com> wrote:I think you have to be British and neurotic (or working in media) to be aware of it. I haven't read and Mencken, although he's on my desert island list, and I'm looking forward to it. You'll have to recommend something...
Also, I love the idea of going to Dar es Salaam for any reason to get richit sounds like a great plan regardless of the outcome. As for meeting up, the rest of the week is a bit nuts, but what does your tomorrow look like? I'm working mornings, so I tend to turn into a pumpkin around 10, 10:30, but before then works for me.
Sorry if these messages seem a bit terse: post-writing all day writing tends to leave me more succinct.

Ha, New Coke. I've heard the term Meow Meow but have no idea what it is; I guess I'm getting less cool. Was reading The Antichrist, which I picked because it was his last completed work. Translation was by Mencken. I'll give the fellow another go at some point.
I was in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania for a stretch of 1998, right after the embassy bombings. Was with my dad, uncle, and a smattering of ex-military guys; would have been safer alone. This was a very unorthodox attempt to get rich that failed, but I benefited in a number of immaterial ways. The whole thing was very futuristic.Anyway, I'm in Bushwick now, about to move into a new place somewhere on Knickerbocker. Let me know if you'd like to meet up sometime soon.

In defense of Nietzsche, I don't know what you read, but I find him very logical, albeit also a continental philosopher, so you kind of have to go with his line of thought. If you're reading him in relation to analytic philosophers, then no, he's definitely not a mathematical thinker. Try "On Truth and Lying In an Extramoral Sense" (or something to that effectdepends on the translation). Also, don't bother with anybody's translations other than Kaufman. Otherwise, sounds like an entertaining and very bloggy day. New Coke, eh? Upon first reading that, I thought it was a new kind of British drug (the media sensationalism over Meow Meowwhatever that ishas been especially entertaining) and then I figured it out. Definitely need to get some sleep tonight.
I'm not quite a full-time freelancer. I'm actually a writer for Slate's news aggregation site, the Slatest, and I freelance on the side. My parents are in D.C. right now, but we were in Mozambique, Honduras, Jamaica, and South Florida, depending on your definition of foreignness. One of my major post-adolescent discoveries has been that travel is a lot more fun without your parents.
Where in East Africa were you?

Had stayed out late in Harlem on Friday so stayed in last night to read random things and watch friend's GF shoot imaginary zombies before falling asleep at like 10:30. Also had been meaning to read Nietzsche for a decade or so and finally got around to doing that last night on ol' Project Gutenberg; maybe it was impressive stuff back in the late 19th century by virtue of relative novelty, but it's not written logically at all, which is odd for German philosophy (and I have actually read almost no philosophy at all other than classical Greek and like two pages of Wittgenstein, but enough to get a sense of who's wrong in what way and why). Actually enjoyed reading H.L. Mencken's introduction to Antichrist more than the actual text. Anyway, decided to write an article on atheism then and now with that intro as the raw material. Also got up early this morning and found myself reading about New Coke for some reason, then devised a game whereby I will force myself to write seemingly-scholarly articles on random subjects found on Wikipedia - making a list of thematics to choose from (easy mode), so going to use the New Coke debacle to illustrate some or another component of social/media theory that I'll probably just make up on the fly. Also tried to go play basketball but pussied out due to wind. Now I'm writing a bunch of thinly-veiled anarchist propaganda for HuffPo and drinking Puerto Rican coffee. But enough about me!

Shame about TNR's stinginess. I remember they pay something like 15 cents a word anyway. I used to be a heroin addict myself; really pumped out the Romanticism back then.
The project is overtly a media reform effort, covertly several other things. I announced it in Vanity Fair about three months ago and have since been recruiting. Info can be found by Googling Project PM, though I'd be happy to tell you more about it.

Thanks, yeah. I like TNR too. Sadly, they wouldn't comp any opium for the review. I attribute that to tough times for magazines.

Clicked on your blog link and saw your review of the opium policy book you did for TNR. Used to subscribe, it's a fine pub as far as they go.
