Yes, it's awesome. It takes a while to figure out the new settings, especially for the military squads, but most of it's on the new wiki, here: http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/Main_Page.

You need to focus your defenses downward, and don't dig too deep until you're ready to defend yourself. In my first fort, a poisonous Great Coral Python forgotten beast killed my entire fortress of 50ish dwarves, even though they already had a well trained squad with steel armor and weapons.
