2:11 AM me: hey, how secure do you think gmail is?
 Andrew: in what sense?
2:12 AM me: as in, if national law enforcement bodies wanted to monitor one's e-mail, how likely is that?
I know that Microsoft compliance thingamajig was leaked a few months back
by that site which was afterwards shut down
Andrew: id say its very likely
me: so not sure to what extent you'd know
Andrew: in that, google can be legally coerced into allowing access
me: so, are there alternatives that could be used that are less likely
  ?
2:13 AM Andrew: off shor ehosting
in that, google is vulnerable because they are a US corporation
 me: does that cost money?
 Andrew: not a lot
$20 a month would be more than sufficient
me: or are there other existing alternatives that would be frew?
  I see
  that's pretty reasonable
2:14 AM Andrew: are you worried?
 me: no
 Andrew: honestly
  nothing is 100% secure
me: but I'm now involved with people like John Penley
Andrew: but in general, the government will not 'hack' your accounts
 me: right, I know
Andrew: they will subpoena them though
2:15 AM me: but I want to make sure that I'm using something that would be immune or at least most immune in terms of worst case scenario, NSA, etc
Andrew: subpoenas work against ISPs too, but with offshore hosting you can encrypt your ISP packets
me: about to be communicating with a lot of people with files
  word
well, give it some thought and let me know what you think is best option
Andrew: also, ironically, our network is best suited to resistance to that sort of attack
2:16 AM me: very good
 Andrew: distributed content and such
me: plus, we'll have that woman with the 15 years experience in information security/risk assessment, etc
so you can have her perform SECOPS attacks on us
2:17 AM Andrew: sure
me: always wanted to have something that needs to engage in SECOPS
2:20 AM know who Billie Armstrong is?
 Andrew: billie joe armstrong?
2:21 AM me: anyway, Penley just put up the mini-manifesto
  yeah
 Andrew: yes
  nice
  lets chat tomorrow morning
2:22 AM i have to get some sleep
 me: word
