Also, Juan Cole finally got back in touch with me today, asked me to resend the info I have in a week or so when he's got more time, so I think we've got him (some of the design of the network is such that it addressed certain negative tendencies regarding communities like reddit, and we're developing add-on features to make research easier and less time-consuming as he'd mentioned that this sort of thing would interest him). Also recruited a few other media people, including someone who quit MTV out of disgust and who studied both media theory and history in college; I'll probably be putting her in charge of communications so you'll probably be hearing from her later on.Thanks again for all those names and e-mails; I'll go after them all as soon as I reach a lull; people just keep doing stupid shit on the internet that I feel compelled to write about. Don't know if you saw my latest T/S post, but one fellow actually attacked LL Cool J for, I guess, pointing out that Fox misrepresented his association with the Palin show. He also accidentally attacked a great number of his fellow Palindrones for having understandably gotten the impression that Cool J would be talking to Palin, by attacking "the press" for stupidly believing that thing that was obviously intended to be believed and which everyone thus believed. Really among the stupidest shit I've ever seen, and I sat that after having been called a racist by a conservative blogger because - seriously - I have fair hair and kin. Seriously. Another Palin supporter, of course.

Apologies - Keep thinking of people as I sit here. Johann Hari is an amazing journalist. Jamie and I just interviewed him again (for the second time) for our radio show. He writes on a wide range of issues, and it's always, always brilliant. He's very accessible via Facebook or email (johann@johannhari.com), and he's a super nice guy, to boot.
Also, Melissa Harris-Lacewell is very good. She primarily writes on race and has been on Maddow a bunch. We've had her on the show, as well.On Tue, Mar 30, 2010 at 6:53 AM, Allison Kilkenny <allisonkilkenny@gmail.com> wrote:
Also, I don't know if he's "landable", but Nir Rosen is one of the only Middle East journalists who actually interviews real life Iraqis to get their take on this whole occupation business. While all the great armchair generals kept speculating (wrongly) about everything, Nir was pretty much right every step of the way. He'd be a valuable addition.

I don't have contact info for these bloggers, but they're part of my daily rotation: Max Blumenthal, Digby, Howie Klein, Jeremy Scahill, Jonathan Shwarz, Andrew Cockburn, all the fellas at Media Matters, ditto for Crooks and Liars, Liliana Segura (one of the main Alternet people. She's my go-to editor for submissions there, and she's a great journalist, too. Her email is: lsegura@gmail.com), Chris Hedges (and everyone at Truthdig), Douglas Haddow (he's more a cultural writer than an investigative journalist, but he writes beautifully if you're interested in going that direction), all the folk at TomDispatch, Wired's Threat Level, Pam Spaulding, Spencer Ackerman, and really any of the FDL folk (Blue Texan, David Dayen, etc.), Kevin Drum, Juan Cole, and Atrios (not for investigative journalism, but for wonderful haiku-like snark), and the Adbusters crew are the shit.
Also -- this is a long shot (they're near to impossible to contact,) but you could try Democracy Now's Amy Goodman and Juan Gonzalez. Juan is actually a great under-exposed journalist. He just blew open the story about NY paying 230 consultants $722M per year for a computer project that is now 7 years behind schedule.
(Sorry for any repeats. I don't remember who I included on the other lists I sent you).On Mon, Mar 29, 2010 at 9:27 PM, Barrett Brown <barriticus@gmail.com> wrote:
Huh, I didn't know Greenwald covered it too. He never ceases to impress. Actually, I e-mailed him about Project PM a couple weeks back but never heard back, so I just left a message on his Facebook page and pointed out that all the cool kids are doing it, dropped yours and Hasting's names, etc. Really hoping to get him on board, as he's my absolute favorite blogger and of course would be in a position to encourage others to join up. Speaking of which, have you given any thought to which other bloggers might be worthwhile recruits? We could really use a few more people before launch rather than after such that they'll be able to help promote/link to the manifesto when it appears and assist in making that appearance more widely-seen.Also, this might be useful for you - editorial contact info for over a dozen major publications. My mommy compiled it for me recently (she's an editor herself); some of these aren't available on the pub websites or print editions. GOTTA CATCH 'EM ALL!

BTW: Don't think I gave you proper props for the Wikileaks coverage. I saw people linking to your and Greenwald's coverage of it in a few places. Good work
On Mon, Mar 29, 2010 at 7:15 PM, Barrett Brown <barriticus@gmail.com> wrote:Yeah, I've had run-ins over there on a couple of occasions; it's like any mob. But the primaries are over, and things have calmed down. Consider this - a lot of the recommended diaries are nonsense rants about bullshit and otherwise worthless, whereas your commentary, which is more wonkish than most, could help at least a bit in changing the culture there by example, as well as expanding your ability to get the topics you're covering - which of course aren't being covered widely enough - out to a wider audience. I was able to get the Wikileaks story covered by more outlets largely by way of Kos, as of course lots of media folks scan the recommended diaries there for topics. Just something to consider, anyway; you can always cross-post at HuffPo and Kos with a link back to your True/Slant piece at the end like I do and thereby come out ahead. But, yeah, to reiterate, I've got nothing but contempt for a lot of those douchebags. The shit they vote to the top is usually ridiculous. On Mon, Mar 29, 2010 at 4:08 AM, Allison Kilkenny <allisonkilkenny@gmail.com> wrote:
Great news about Hastings. I don't have particularly fond memories of Kos, since I was practically chased out of the place by zealot Obamaniacs early in the election year for suggesting he might sell out Democrats and the black community. Actually, I think I posted something called "Barack Obama and Jesse Jackson's Drunken One Night Stand." No one was happy.
Of course, they're much more reasonable now that shit has died down and they see he's a centrist pragmatist and not the liberal messiah. Glad they've come around.
I've sort of excommunicated myself from blogs that aren't True/Slant, which I know is absolutely a retarded strategy and a great way to diminish my reach, but I'm sick of these huge blogs (Kos, Huffpost) basically making a profit from our free content. Naturally, I don't count Project PM in that group, since I view PM as a journalistic endeavor and a way to enhance our respective content.
This turned in a cathartic bitchfest and I didn't mean for that to happen. Sorry. Hastings sounds like a catch (always good to get the burned ones fresh from the belly of the beast). On Mon, Mar 29, 2010 at 6:30 PM, Barrett Brown <barriticus@gmail.com> wrote:Hi, Allison-Good news; just spent an hour on the phone with Michael Hastings, who served as Newsweek's Baghdad correspondent for a number of years and who's about to head over to Afghanistan for GQ and other pubs (and who also writes for True/Slant). He's very enthusiastic about Project PM and has agreed to join up. When he left Newsweek, he did a great piece on how much it sucks, and is basically on the same page as us in terms of media dynamics in particular, so he'll be a great asset. Also, we now have our own senior security analyst/global risk assessor/architecture developer with 15 years experience advising governments and companies on such things; recruited her the other day when I had a cross-post at Daily Kos go to the top of the recommended list (it was on Wikileaks, which finally got some coverage).Do you cross-post at Kos at all? It's a pretty good way to reach seasoned activists and readers in general, even if the place is often wacky.
