My publisher, Drew Nederpelt, might be joining me, as he wanted to take a professional vid of the lecture for promotional purposes (apparently he doesn't trust interns) plus do lunch afterwards. Could your car seat him?

I'll call you on Tuesday morning before I get on the train and then again when I arrive in Hoboken if I don't talk to you before then. Also will e-mail you with a general outline of what I'll be talking about by tomorrow evening so that you can make any needed suggestions. Thanks,Barrett BrownBrooklyn, NY512-560-2302On Sun, Jan 10, 2010 at 1:06 PM, robert lynch <robertlynch66@yahoo.com> wrote:
Barrett,
The syllabus (attached here) has us discussing "Finding common ground between science and religion. Discussion of Millers book- Finding Darwins God".
We will devote about an hour to discussing this book but for the first hour or two we can talk about anything you would like. The students are relatively well versed in social evolution (kinship altruism and reciprocal altruism), evolutionary theory and the scientific method. We have discussed religion as an adaptation too. The challenge for me has been to find some common ground between evolution and religion as my inclination has been to see them as fundamentally incompatible ways of understanding the origin and diversity of life, universe, moral systems etc...
I have tried to introduce Joseph Campbell and the 'truth' of myths as metaphors.
Basically I want you to talk about anything you would like and hopefully the students will challenge you on some of these issues. So don't worry about being provocative etc...
The class starts at 9 am on Tuesday and runs until 12:30 pm. We will take a 15 minute break in the middle. I can pick you up in Hoboken around 8 am and drive you to New Brunswick (take subway/ path) and then I can drop you off there after class.
I can also pay you something like 100 dollars for coming but will need to wait until I get paid in 2 weeks. I know this is not much but the enrollment was low (7 students) and they hammered me on salary (half of what I originally thought). Well let me know and we can discuss some of this in car on the way if you are still interested. Thanks.
Robert
