Howdy-

Thanks, that's perfect. I'll get back to you on Monday or thereabouts with the cover letter and a couple more contacts.

Thanks again,

Apparently Christopher and that partner had some sort of weird gay falling out thing that I do not care to learn further about because LOL CHRISTOPHER ROMANCE. Anyway, I just checked with my friend and he doesn't have illustrator, so a trace would be great. It doesn't need to be any specific size other than that it needs to be bigger than the one as it appears on the site so that my friend can do whatever manipulation needs to be done to get it on the t-shirts. So, maybe three or four times bigger? I'm assuming that would work for him and that he could take it from there. I really don't know what I'm talking about but, yeah, bigger.

I'll make you a cover letter in a couple of days when I'm done with my book (due to the publisher on Jan 2nd), at which point I'll also get back to you with a couple of other contacts for potential gigs; just been swamped with all this shit in the meantime. If you don't hear from me by the 4th or 5th, just send me an e-mail to remind me.

As for writing samples, there's really no protocol to it; just gather the best you've got and send the editor in question one or two, pasted in the body of an e-mail after your cover letter. Of course, it's best if you've got a bunch to choose from and a variety of topics so that you'll have something of highest possible relevance to whomever you're contacting. The cover letter I do for you will have a line in it to the effect of  "I've included a relevant sample in case you'd like to take a look." If you've got any specific questions about querying about a particular article you'd like to write or have already written, feel free to give me a call and I'll go over it with you, although you'll find it's pretty straightforward.

One thing - you might want to get a copy of Writers Market 2009 or 2010 if it's out yet; includes several thousand listings for publications, production houses, theaters that accept plays or whatever, and all that, including contact info for editors, a bit about what they like to run, how much they pay, and all that. Obviously a very useful thing to have particularly when you're starting out and don't have a regular outlet.

Barrett,

The mustache guy was created by Christopher's old partner and I have never seen the original file. However, I have done a trace in Adobe Illustrator so that it can be recreated and scaled up to large sizes. I can send that to you to give to your friend, though if he doesn't have the program it won't work. If that is the case, I can scale it up for the both of you if you tell me how big it needs to be.

If you could write me a generic letter, that would be great. I would appreciate that. Also, I have done some writing in the past and am fairly confident with it but am not quite sure the protocol for putting together writing samples. If you had any light you could shed on the subject, that would be greatly appreciated as well. Thank you for all your help.

Best,
Ian

Do you happen to know where I could obtain the largest version of the Scallywag logo, the profile of the mustache fop man? I'm trying to get some merchandising set in motion but my friend needs a better or bigger version of that profile to do it, apparently.

I sent a couple e-mails out to some editors I've worked with regarding any available graphic design gigs for you. Also, you might want to e-mail my friend Frank Santopadre (franksantopadre@yahoo.com). He writes for Vanity Fair on occasion as well as a couple of other pubs I used to work with; more importantly, he runs a small firm called Comedy Wise which does content and events and whatnot for corporations, television shows, etc., and they've got a nice website already but perhaps might be in need of someone to do graphics for them either for their site or for one of their clients. At any rate, drop him a line and tell him you've worked with me a bit and are available in the future if they need anything done in terms of design.

Skeptic magazine, which I write for on occasion, might also be in need of someone to do design on occasion, but they don't pay their writers so it would probably only be useful to you as something to maybe do once and put on your resume. Let me know if you want me to get in contact with the editor, Michael Shermer.

Also, let me know if you'd like me to write you a generic cover letter; I'm pretty good with those, and can of course do it in such a way as that you can customize each one to the extent necessary.

Barrett,

I am attaching my resume for you to take a look at but I don't actually have a cover letter, I have been writing emails specifically for each job instead. My skill set ranges from design and illustration to video editing and editorial writing. You can see some of my work at www.ianvens.com.

Thanks,
