Hello,
My name is Asilia. I am a 28 and a graduate student at Columbia. I am studying English education and educational anthropology, which is just cultural anthropology in an educational context. It's very interesting. I also work a variety of part-time jobs where I get my homework done and receive nominal pay to do things like answer phones and turn off lights or lock doors. Normally, I am an English teacher. I can now teach college though I've only taught a summer class. Freshman are not that different from high school kids. I am currently working on an autobiographical ethnography project so I write a lot as well, but I've never been paid. In college, I wrote for the entertainment section of the school newspaper and got free tickets and Cd's, so I was sort of paid. I have a degree in journalism but after an internship found the field to be unpleasant. I hope I am not offending you. Anyway, I ended up teaching high school English which I still love, although I don't do it now because of school.
I am from LA but have lived in New York long enough to know up from down. I currently live in Williamsburg but am very familiar with lots of parts of Brooklyn. I worked at Rikers last year and had to do a photo project where I took photos in the inmates neighborhoods. I wandered around Brownsville, Canarsie, Bed-Stuy and took pictures of crack dens and projects. It was not fun, but I did learn a lot about Brooklyn. I would not call myself a New Yorker though. My California ways are pretty ingrained. I am very easy-going and eat avocados almost everyday. I've learned to walk very fast and run up subway steps but I still miss trains because I refuse to shove my way on. I am very good at fixing toilets and do not get too grossed out by bathroom matters, which has nothing to do with being from California.
Anyway, I'd like to talk with you further about your available room.
Hope to hear from you.
Sincerely,
Asilia
