Peter –

I think you’re on the right track.  We’ve got to market our mission in terms of fairness and the protection of our constitution.  If we try to defend our mission in terms of whether or not there is a god, we’re gonna lose in the court of public opinion.  Even public officials (and potential public officials) that agree with us will deny us three times before the rooster crows or whatever the hell Peter was supposed to have done to jesus.  We have to somehow make it ok for politicians to support our efforts.  Something like “I believe in god, but I also believe in our constitution and these religious extremists are trying to undermine our basic rights as Americans.  I disagree with the Atheists on the existence of god but I agree with them on the need to protect our constitutional rights as well as the need to keep a wall of separation between the church and state.”  Statements about choosing our representatives based on the power of their ideas and their commitment to the constitution as opposed to their personal religious beliefs would also help us move forward.  If we’re determined to elect folks based solely on an Atheist platform, with a few exceptions, we’re gonna be marginalized.

EQUALITY, A MAJORITY CAN'T VOTE ON MINORITY'S RIGHTS!

the following is stolen from the LGBT community, but it can also be used by our community in a very real way.

I think we need to incorporate some aggressive marketing! We need to trumpet the following points, not just play defense against their outrageous fabrications:

Voting against Secular rights and the Wall of Separation will usher in a police state that will next target Latinos, etc. (voting against one minority will lead to the majority turning on the next group)

Voting and speaking against against hate crime laws is promoting violence against Atheists and all other Secularists.

The religious right wants to take away your right to use contraception, and force women to have children against their will.

The religious right wants to keep children who have lost their parents in orphanages, to be raised by the state.

The religious right is against single mothers. All pro-parental rights go to heterosexual Christian couples.

Got any others?
