Free books in the mail from England, what fun. What does Fortean Times pay for book reviews these days, if anything?

Barrett,

I'll send you two books which have just arrived, one of which is a gut-wrenchingly awful 2012 thing, the other a rather good one about a 19th century hoax. The 2012 monstrosity is worth about 300 words, and t'other about 750. Send me your address and I'll bung them in the post.

Howdy-

If you're talking about the Enlighten the Vote blog, it's still a work in progress; we were the Godless Americans Political until two weeks ago and are in the process of relaunching. You should see the e-mails we get. As for Palin, she's the best thing that ever happened to America insomuch as one could point to her and be like, "Yeah, that's the GOP now."

I'd be particularly interested in reviewing books that are clearly going to be terrible, particularly if they involve politics or theology. My interests tend to involve history, pseudohistory, conspiracy theories, psychedelic drugs, fringe theories in general but particularly those having to do with metaphysics such as this whole 2012 movement. Even though I'm allegedly some ultra-materialist skeptic, I actually ascribe to several bizarre hypotheses and have polite interest in others, and at any rate my ultimate goal is to make fun of things. So if anything stupid is coming out, I'm your guy.

Thanks,

Barrett

Hi, Val-

Sure, I'd be happy to have the review appear on nthposition, and I'd be interested in writing book reviews or anything else for Fortean Times. Do you generally assign books or do you prefer to be queried?

Thanks,

Barrett Brown

Dear Barrett,

Thanks for that. I'll drop you a line when I put it up.

Generally I send books out according to people's interests. What are yours? It's always worth asking, though – I'm better at keeping an eye on UK books, so US ones can slip past me.

I had a good old wander round your blog – I loved the Darwin-shaped stain, and that Palin remark is priceless. She's heartwarmingly stupid, bless her. Obama will struggle to put the mess right - http://www.theonion.com/content/news_briefs/black_man_given_nations struck the right note!

Best,

Val
