JoDee-

Thanks for the responses; I also got some great quotes from Jennifer Marchand, who's clearly in love with you guys.

Thanks again,

Barrett Brown

1. A reviewer for the Statesman wrote that "this is what Squeeze would sound like if a young Syd Barrett were a collaborator." Assuming you agree, do you think there's any particular member who evokes Barrett most, or is any audio resemblance simply the result of your collective styles?
A: The Squeeze comparisons make no sense to me. I'd never heard them until about 4 years ago, and it sounded unlike anything I've ever written. It's just that there's melody and some sort of narrative in the lyrics, I guess. I'd love to be compared to The Band, but people see us having some sort of English thing, which I don't really understand, although the Barrett connection is flattering. His lyrics have always been as visionary and inspiring as Dylan's. I wouldn't compare anyone to Syd. His influence both as a musician and a songwriter will always be there. I've just always been influenced more by Lightnin' Hopkins or Bob Dylan.
2 Aside from being based in Austin, does The Alice Rose strike you as a particularly "Austin-y" band (assuming you believe that any such thing exists)?
A: We've never felt we were an "Austin band", but I don't think there is one, anyway. When I think of an "Austin band", I think of bands that are just lazy. We've taken risks with our music that Austin bands just don't bother with. It kind of nice to be a little outside the scene, which is trend-ridden anyway. We've never been a part of any trend, other than the one that started 50 years ago when kids started playing rock and roll.
3. Would the NPR song of the day thing qualify as your first big break, or did you get any similarly prominent press before that?
A: The NPR thing came through David Brown of K.U.T.'s Texas Music Matters. He really went out on a limb and got us on there, and we'll always be greatful to him for that. We're probably one of the only unsigned bands to have gotten that. One could only wish there were more like him, but there just aren't that many left; people who love music for it's own sake, and take a chance. So, we were very lucky.
4. How do you see things proceeding in 2008?
A: We'll be releasing a new single in March, touring the Midwest again in April, and cutting either an EP or our second album afterwards, depending on how much money falls out of the sky.

Let me know if you have any questions.
Thanks,
Barrett Brown
