Thanks for the responses, these will work well.
I'm covering the Iowa caucus today for another news outlet so won't have a chance to do the phone interview with Jacobs until tomorrow; would 1 pm be okay? If not, let me know what time would work best.
Thanks,
Barrett

The band has been compared to both David Bowie and the Beach Boys; for those who can't imagine what such a combination might sound like, which of those groups do you think more closely approximates the sound and sensibilities of Tacks?
Wow i don't think i've ever heard the Bowie comparison...not really sure what aspects of his music I can comment on that stick out in Tacks' songs, but I would have to say that a knack for big melodies and danceable rhythms is something the band can attribute to him. I'd probably say that there's more of a Beach Boys vibe overall in the production/instrumentation and arranging, because unlike Bowie, Tacks doesn't really put the focus on the singer as much as the whole group.
They're all jazz musicians and listen to lots of old funk/soul/free jazz records so they really have a good sense of how to play as a band and move as one unit, so to speak. It's really incredible to watch them to their thing on stage as you can see how all the parts fit together and all support each other, without a real dominating force.
Sorry to drag on - i'd say Tacks' sound is something like Beach Boys meets Radiohead...
It's been noted that Tacks doesn't quite fit into the "indie rock" genre. Does it fit into anything?
I think that's the beauty for me of managing a band like Tacks. I don't think they quite fit into the "hipster" scene but I think they could hang on a bill with any indie rock band, jam band etc.
It's indie pop essentially with an experimental element and depthness to it that you don't really get in most of today's "indie rock" bands.
Aside from being based in Austin, does Tacks strike you as a particularly "Austin-y" band (assuming you believe that any such thing exists)?
Totally. The band came together while playing in different groups and evolved from that. I think it's a very Austin-y thing to have musicians who play different music in different groups and somehow find the one with the magic spark that just works.
The band is fused of a free jazz drummer, a dub reggae bassist, the keyboard player for the Polyphonic Spree who is jazz trained, and a guitarist who composes symphonies and plays in 3 other bands.
I think that's what Austin is all about.
How did you get involved with Tacks?
I've known the guitarist, Nathan Stein, since we're kids and I was working for Dr. Dog's management team a couple year's ago when Tacks started. Nathan was super excited about the project as he was last to join and passed me an early demo. I totally fell in love with it and said i'll do anything they wanted done. So they took me up on my offer and i've been managing them since december 06.
Tacks has done 2 US tours in 2007 and we've signed a record deal in the UK and toured there in November 07.
Plans for '08 include releasing a full length record and touring the hell out of US/Europe. We're gonna do the festival circuit in Europe next summer and it's exciting to see what happens next.
Thanks,
Barrett Brown

My name is Barrett Brown, and I've been asked by the editor of Austin Monthly to do a profile on Tacks, the Boy Disaster for the magazine's March issue, in which they'll be profiling about eight different up-and-coming Austin bands. Would you be available for a brief interview, either by e-mail, phone, or IM, sometime in the next two or three days? I'd also like to talk to a third party that's familiar with your band, such as a producer, promoter, or someone associated with a local venue at which you've played a few times, or perhaps your manager Lev Kuperman if he's available (I've CC'd him on this e-mail).
Please get back to me when you have a moment. The due date for this piece is the 10th of this month, so if you'd have time to do this pretty soon, I'd appreciate it.
Thanks,
Barrett Brown
